Founded in 1845 as the North Carolina Institute for the Education of the Deaf and Dumb, the Governor Morehead School was one of the earliest public institutions to educate deaf students in the United States. In 1851, the school began accepting blind students, and in 1867, it became the first public institution in the nation to admit blind and deaf African American students.

The Governor Morehead School, renamed in 1969 for Gov. John Motley Morehead, continues to operate today as the only residential school for blind and vision-impaired students in North Carolina.
