Governor Morehead School
The Governor Morehead School digital collection documents the history and development of North Carolina’s first residential, state-supported school for blind and deaf students. The collection contains administrative correspondence, Board of Directors reports and minutes, curriculum books, photographs, student records, and other papers from 1843 to 1970. The bulk of the materials are student records documenting enrollment information, grades, and travel in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
The Governor Morehead School, founded in Raleigh in 1845, continues to operate today as the state’s flagship residential school for blind and low-vision students.

North Carolina Institution for the Education of the Deaf and Dumb and of the Blind, 1852-1855
North Carolina Institution for the Deaf and Dumb and Blind, 1855-1905
State School for the Blind and Deaf, 1905-1969
