General Assembly Session Records
The General Assembly Session Records digital collection features records of early North Carolina state legislatures and colonial assemblies. These records consist of bills, amendments, petitions, committee reports, gubernatorial messages, legislative messages, tally sheets, election certificates, resignations, and other material related to the work of each session of North Carolina’s various forms of the General Assembly.
The collection reflects North Carolina’s legislative changes from its colonial origins as the Royal Governor’s appointed council to a bicameral General Assembly consisting of the Senate and House of Commons (renamed the House of Representatives per the N.C. Constitution of 1868).
The State Archives of North Carolina holds General Assembly materials from 1709 to 1999; the General Assembly Session Records digital collection centers on the earliest records, ranging from 1709 to 1872.
