18th Century Estate Records
The Secretary of State Inventories and Sales of Estates digital collection provides information about the property of North Carolinians who died in the 18th century, sometimes without leaving a will.
The collection is not comprehensive: These types of inventories were often filed at the county level and not with the Secretary of State. (See Colonial Court Records.)
However, with a scope of more than 1,000 records covering the majority of eastern North Carolina, this collection provides a vivid look into everyday life during the colonial era and early in North Carolina’s statehood.
Some records in this collection contain content that may be harmful, including language that reflects outdated and offensive views as well as references to violence.
We strive to make North Carolina Digital Collections as accurate as possible. If you find any errors, please contact us at archives.webedit@dncr.nc.gov.
