Pre-MesozoiccrystalinerocksintheeasternApexQuadranglerepresentsomeoftheeasternmostexposuresoftheLateProterozoictoCambrianCarolinaterrane,togetherwithasmalportionoftheLateProterozoicCrabtreeterranetotheeast.Triassic sedimentaryrocksoftheDurhamsub-basinoftheDeepRiverMesozoicriftbasinunderliethewesternportionoftheApexQuadrangle.UnitdescriptionscommontoBlakeandClark(2016),andBlake(2008)fromtheCaryandRaleighWestgeologic maps,respectively,areusedand/oradaptedforconformitywithon-strikeunits.
VolcanogenicunitsoftheeasternmostportionoftheCarolinaterrane(CarysequenceofParker(1979);CaryformationofFarrar(1985a)andHibbardetal.(2002)havebeenmetamorphosedtothechloriteandbiotitezonesoftheuppergreenschistfaciesduringlatePaleozoiccontractionaltectonothermalactivityandearlyMesozoicextension.TheCrabtreeterraneexperiencedamphibolitefaciesmetamorphism.Mesozoicsedimentary,intrusive,andcataclasticrocksareunmetamorphosed.Despitethe effectsofdeformationandmetamorphism,LateProterozoictoCambrianvolcanogenicrocksoftheCarolinaterraneintheApexQuadrangletypicalypreserverelictplutonicandvolcanicigneoustextures,orsedimentarytextures,alowingforprotolithidentification.Inotherexposures,partitionedhighstrainhasresultedinmylonitic,ultramylonitic,andphyloniticrockswhoseprotolithsaredifficulttodiscern.
MetaigneousrocksinbothterranesareclassifiedandnamedusingthenomenclatureoftheInternationalUnionofGeologicalSciences(IUGS)subcommissiononthesystematicsofigneousrocksafterLeMaitre(202).Relictigneoustextures,modal mineralassemblages,ornormalizedmineralassemblageswhenwhole-rockgeochemicaldataareavailable,providethebasisfornamingmetaigneouslithodemes.ApreliminarylithodemicdesignationisdevelopedherefolowingArticles31-42oftheN orthAmericanStratigraphicCode.Theserockunits,whichlackgeochronologicdataandstratigraphicfacingdirections,warrantsuchadesignation.PreviousgeologicmapsandlithologicdescriptionscoveringtheApexQuadrangle[Parker(1979);Farrar(1985a,b)]assistedinthedevelopmentofthecurrentmappingresults.DetaileddescriptionsofsomelithodemicunitsarereportedinBlake(194),StoddardandBlake(1994),andBlakeetal.(2001).
TriassicsedimentaryrocksoftheApexQuadranglearepartoftheChathamGroupoftheN ewarkSupergroup(WeemsandOlsen,1997)andoccurintheeast-centralportionoftheDurhamsub-basin,acomponentbasinoftheDeepRiverMesozoicriftbasin.DetaileddescriptionsofTriassicsedimentaryunitsarereportedinHoffmanandGalager(1989)andClarketal.(2001).Duetotheinterfingeringnatureofthesesedimentsandthelackofdistinctmarkerbeds,lithofaciesmappingwasutilizedto grouptherocksintomappableunits.HoffmanandGalagher(1989)identifieddistinctlithofaciesintheDurhamsub-basin.Theselithofaciesweregroupedinthreelithofaciesassociations,identifiedasLithofaciesAssociationI(LAI),LithofaciesAssociationI(LAI),andLithofaciesassociationI(LAI).IngeneralLAIcontainsinterbeddedsandstoneandsiltstoneandisinterpretedasbraidedstreamdeposits.LAIalsocontainsinterbeddedsandstoneandsiltstone,butisinterpretedasa meanderingfluvialsystemsurroundedbyvegetatedfloodplain.LAIcontainspoorlysortedsandstone,pebblysandstone,andconglomerate.LAIisinterpretedasaluvialfancomplexescharacterizedbybroad,shalowchannelswithhighsediment concentrations,andlocaly,high-energydebrisflows.LAIlithologiesarenotpresentinthemaparea.
