UN ITDESCRIPTION S Jd�Diabase:Blacktogreenish-black,fine-tomedium-grained,diabase;consistsprimarilyofplagioclase,augiteandmaycontainolivine.Occursasdikesupto100ftwide.Typicalyoccursasspheroidalyweatheredboulderswithagrayish-brownweatheringrind. MiltonTe rane�Milton-ChopawamsicArc(ca.475-450Ma) OMcc-Cunninghamcomplex:Heterogeneousmixtureofmediumtodarkgreybiotitegneissandbiotiteschistrangingfrommassive,equigranulargraniticgneisstolayers andlensesofbiotite�garnet�silimaniteschist.Themostcommonrocktypeisbiotitegneissthatrepresentsahybridbetweenthesetwoend-members,althoughdistinctiregular-shapedareasofeitherend-membercanbefound.ThegraniticgneissislocalyK-feldsparmegacrysticwithcrystalsupto50mmlong.Layering,atcentimeterto meterscale,isdefinedbyfeldsparporphyroclastconcentrationaswe lasbiotitecontent;itisgeneralysubtleinmostoftheunit,butitisaccentuatednearthecontactofthe gneisseswiththeCountryLinecomplex.Localy,meter-scalepodsofamphibolite,dioriticgneiss,andcalc-slicategneissareenvelopedinamatrixofbiotitegneiss.The granticgneissiscompositionalysimilartoandappearstogradeintotheCarboniferousKilgoreorthogneiss.Thebiotiteschistissimilarto,andappearstogradeintotheOrdovician(?)Miltonschistandparagneiss.ThusthecomplexappearstobeamixtureofOrdovicianandMississippianrocks. CarolinaTe rane TheCountryLinecomplex(ca.614�323Ma) ZMclg�Unseparatedbiotitegraniteorthogneiss:Buffweathering,mediumgrey,weaklytostronglyfoliated,mainlymediumgrainedbiotitegranite. ZMclm�NeoproterozoicmaficgneissandamphiboliteinterlayeredwithMississippianpegmatitesandorthogneiss:G reenschisttoamphibolitefaciesmaficgneisses withinterlayeredgranitoidsandgraniticpegmatites;subordinatebiotitegneissandminormetapyroxenite,semipeliticschist,andfelsicschist(She l,1996).Themaficgneisses rangefromamphibolitestobiotite-amphibolegneisses.Commonly,theyarelayeredonacentimetertometerscale,althoughinsomeplacestheyaremassive,witha medium�tocoarse-grainedgabbro-liketexture.Themaficgneissesareextensivelyinterlayeredwithgranticpegmatites,localyenvelopebrownish-grey,fine-grained granitoids,andareintrudedbycross-cuttinggranticpegmatites. N orthoftheYanceyvilegranitegneiss(YanceyvileandLeasburgquadrangles),thecomplexischaracterizedbyaveryregularlylayered(centimeter-scale),fine-tomedium-grainedgraybiotite+blackishgreenamphibolegneisswithinterlayeredgraniticgneiss(She l,1996).Localy,overthespanofafewmeters,theregularlylayeredgneiss gradesintomigmatite(sensulato)withanetworkoffoliatedcoarsegranitoidcontainingmeterscalepodsofamphibolitewithlayeringandfoliationobliquetothatinthe granitoid. BiotitegneissisaminorcomponentoftheCountryLinecomplex;typicalyitisafine-tomedium-grainedequigranular,grayquartz-feldspar-biotite+garnetgneiss.G eneralyitformsmassiveandhomogeneouslens-shapedbodiesthataretoosmaltoberesolvedat1:24,000. Zirconfromalayeredmaficgneisssub-unitintheSouthBoston,VAareahasyieldedadiscordantupperinterceptageof613.9+/-9.3Mathatisinterpretedtoreflectaprotolith ageforthemaficgneisses.Zirconandsphenefromthesamesamplehaveyieldedaconcordantageofca.323Ma(Wortmanetal.,1998).Concordantlyinterlayered pegmatitesincreaseinvolumetowardstheMississippianYanceyvileorthogneiss(YanceyvileandLeasburgquadrangles.),suggestingthattheconcordantpegmatitesarealsoMississippian.Thus,thecomplexisamixtureofN eoproterozoicandMississippianrocks. CZqd�Quartzdioriteplutons:Fine-tocoarse-grained,heterogeneouslyfoliated,biotiteand/oramphibolebearing,quartzdiorite. AlbemarleArc(ca.550-530Ma) CZrp-RoxboroPluton:Massivetolocalyveryweaklyfoliated,leucocratic(CIlessthan10),pinkish,medium-tocoarse-grained,hypidiomorphicgranular,metamorphosed granite.Maficmineralspresentinrockaremostcommonlybiotiteintergrownwithchloriteand/orhornblendeintergrownwithactinolite.PlutonmappatterntruncatesAaronFormationunitsandHycoFormationvolcanics.Wortmanetal.(2000)reportedaU-Pbageof546.5+3.0/-2.4MafortheRoxboropluton(OliveHilQuadrangle.).Boulderfields areacommongeomorphicexpressionabovetheRoxboropluton. AaronFormation(Youngestdetritalzirconsofca.578and588Ma) Zav�Virgilinavolcanics:Mafic�felsicvolcaniclasticrocksoftheVirglinamemberaretypicalyhomogenousandcoarse-tofine-grainedwithvariableamountsofquartz,feldspar,andlithicfragments(25%togreaterthan75%).DescriptionfromBowman(2010). Zac�AaronConglomerate:Thelowerclasticrockmemberconglomeratemarkerunitiscomposedmainlyofclastsofquartzite,veinquartz,andvolcanicclaststhatrangefrom2cm-15cm;localy,jasperandhematite/magnetiteclastsoccur.Theconglomerateistypicalypoorlysorted,withslightlyflattenedroundedclaststhatisclastsupportedintheuprightlimbandmatrixsupportedintheoverturnedlimboftheVirglinasyncline.DescriptionfromBowman(2010).YoungestdetritalzirconsfromAaronFormation conglomeraterangefromca.578to588Ma(Samsonetal.,2001andPolock,2010,respectively). Za�Aaronclasticsedimentaryrocks:Mostlygreyvolcanicsandstoneandsiltstone.Volcanicsandstonesarequartz-andfeldspar-rich,rangingbetween15%-40%volcaniclithicsandmoderateamountsofopaquesthatareconcentratedinlayersparaleltobedding.Sandstonesaremedium-tocoarse-grainedwithbedsthatrangeinthicknessfrom2mmto20cm.Primarystructuressuchascross-beddingandgradedbeddingarecommonlyfoundthroughouttheunit.O utcropsofsiltstonesaremassivetothinlybedded andbeddedvarietiesconsistofalternatinglightanddarkgreenishgraylaminationsthatrangefrom1to5mmthick.DescriptionfromBowman(2010). HycoArc(ca.635-610Ma) Zh-HycoFormation:Dominantlygreenschistfaciesfelsicvolcanicandvolcaniclasticrockswithsubordinateintermediateandmaficcomponents.Theformationextends alongtheeasternmarginoftheHycoshearzone.Primaryfeaturesarewe lpreservedinmostoftheHycoFormation.Themostcommonrocktypeisfelsiccrystaltuff containingabundantanhedralcrystalsofeitherquartzorplagioclaseupto3mmindiameter.Thetuffsaretypicalyinterlayeredwithfelsiclapilituffs,quartz-muscovite phylites,pebblyvolcanicconglomerate,andintermediatetomaficcrystaltuffs.TheHycoFormationrecordsfelsictointermediatemagmatismduringaca.20m.y.span startingatca.633Ma(Wortmanetal.,2000;BradleyandMiler,201).
