HISTORY AND DESCRIPTION
(INCLUDING PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION) :
Includes correspondence, diaries, tour notebooks, autobiographical
writings, scholarly writings, research notes, study photographs of works of art,
and a copy of Dr. Sterne's biography of Dr. Valentiner. The personal papers,
professional correspondence, biographical writings, and some other materials
were lent to Dr. Sterne when writing her biography. In 1981 these materials
were lent to the Archives of American Art for microfilming. The study photo¬
graphs of Italian sculpture were subsequently lent to the Detroit Institute of
Art .
The papers have been only partially arranged. The diaries, tour notebooks,
and correspondence have been put into order. The writings are in rough order
only, and the study photographs in some disarray. See note below at the proper
place in the following inventory.
