Collection: William R. Pool e-Raleigh Times Carriers-Photograph Collection

some tears and cracked emulsion)
Acquisition: The collection was donated February 5, 2008, by Joseph M. Lee, 111, and Virginia P.
Lee, 35 Summit Drive, Covington, GA 30016-1798
Description: Panoramic group photo of Raleigh Times paper carriers (mostly boys and young
men) and a few adult women and men in front of a bus and the United States Capitol building in
Washington, DC, August 27, 1929. Sign on top of bus reads, “The Raleigh Times. Eastern and
Central North Carolina’s Leading Afternoon Newspaper. Carriers. Winners of Big Circulation
Campaign.” William R. Poole (30 October 1913-15 September 2000) was a Raleigh Times
carrier and is shown fourteenth from the right side of the photo. William R. Poole, father of the
donor of this photograph, Virginia Poole Lee, was bom in Raleigh, NC, and was a broadcast
journalist with the US Department of Agriculture. He began his career working in Washington,
DC, then in Thomasville, GA, and finally in Atlanta, GA, where he was well known as the voice
of the Farm News at noon daily on Station WSB. After retirement he moved to Plantation, FL.
He died on February 1 5, 2000, at the age of 86 of complications following an automobile
