Description: The collection consists basically of account books and
estate papers for families living in the Cashie Neck, Lewiston, and
Roxobel area of northwestern Bertie County, as well as some families
living over the line in Northampton County, The connecting link
between the families is Whitmell T. Sharrock of Windsor, Bertie County
(1808-ca. 1872), who generally is either the administrator of the
estate or a relative of the family. For example, Sharrock's daughter
by his first wife (Sarah Spivey) was Sarah W. Sharrock who married
Samuel Gill, who left his papers with his father-in-law when he
migrated to Tennessee. Sharrock's second wife was Margaret Home,
daughter of Turner Home, who administered several of these estates.
Sharrock's granddaughter was Margaret 0. Sharrock (Cobb) Speight
(1854-1937).
Arrangement of Papers:
The papers had already been arranged by Francis Speight when they
were given to the Archives. This arrangement and the original folders/
envelopes have been preserved intact. The folders also contain lists
of names extracted by Mr. Speight from the documents, as well as notes
on relationships which will be helpful to researchers. For example,
one of Mr. Speight's notes reads , "The Humphrey Hardy family is probably
the Hardy family of Bertie "County from whom General Douglas McArthur's
mother was descended. They owned Black Rock plantation on the Chowan
River. Humphrey Hardy's son H. H. Hardy lived at Turner's Cross roads
