NCCU Chancellor to Speak at Graduation

has served both as Student
Government Association
president and as president
of the college's chapter of
the Phi Theta Kappa honor
society, will be the student
speaker. Ceremonies are set

Campus.
Nelms is the tenth chief executive of NCCU,
which celebrates its centennial this year. A native
of Crawfordsville, Arkansas, Nelms majored in
agronomy and chemistry at the University of Ar-

ing NCCU, Nelms served
as vice president for insti-

student affairs for the Indi¬
ana University system. He has been awarded the
President's Medal from the University of Michi¬
gan and from Indiana University, and the State of
Indiana's Sagamore of the Wabash — the highest
civilian award bestowed by the governor.

to Speak at Basic Skills Commencement
VGCC will hold special commencement exercises dedicated exclusively to new
graduates of Adult Basic Skills programs (Adult High School and GED) on Thursday,
May 13, starting at 6 p.m. in the Civic Center on Main Campus.
Dr. Priscilla Chavis-Lockley of Creedmoor, a VGCC graduate, will be the princi¬
pal commencement speaker. Chavis-Lockley is currently the head counselor and col¬
lege/career counseling coordinator at Eaton-Johnson Middle School in Henderson. A
J.F. Webb High School graduate, Chavis-Lockley earned an early childhood education
degree at VGCC in 1977. While working as a teacher's aide, she earned an associate in
arts at VGCC and transferred credits to N.C. Central University. Chavis-Lockley eventu¬
ally earned five more college degrees, including a doctorate from N.C. State University.
During a varied career in education, she has been a teacher and counselor in elementary,
middle, and high schools in Granville, Warren and Vance counties.
GRADUATION REMINDER
Curriculum Graduates: Don’t forget that a mandatory rehearsal for curriculum graduation will held on Thursday, May 13 at 11
a.m. at the Gazebo. It will last approximately 90 minutes and be followed by a picnic lunch. All graduates should have received
a letter in early April confirming that their application for graduation was received and processed. If you did not receive this letter,
please contact the Registrar’s Office immediately at (252) 738-3265. Congratulations on your pending graduation!
