GENERAL ASSEMBLY FILLS 29 VACANCIES In one of its final acts ,
ON UNIVERSITY'S BOARD OF TRUSTEES the 1969 General Assembly
elected 29 North Carolinians
to serve on the University’s Board of Trustees. Recommendations to fill the 29
vacancies were made by the Joint Committee on University Trustees. The Senate
Committee was headed by Senator Hargrove ( Skipper ) Bowles, Jr. , of Greensboro,
and the Chairman of the House Committee was Representative Donald M. Stanford
of Chapel Hill .
Those elected to eight year terms were:
R. Kelly Bowles, Greensboro; Victor S. Bryant, Durham; Representative
John T. Church, Henderson; William A. Dees, Jr., Goldsboro; Edwin Duncan, Sr.,
Sparta; Senator Albert J. Ellis, Jacksonville; Bruce A. Elmore, Asheville; Henry
A. Foscue, High Point; William C. Harris, Jr., Raleigh; Judge William A. Johnson,
Lillington; John R. Jordan, Jr., Raleigh; Robert B. Jordan, III, Mount Gilead;
Thomas W. Lambeth, Greensboro; C. Knox Massey, Durham; Reid A. Maynard,
Burlington; George Y. Ragsdale, Raleigh; Senator Marshall A. Rauch, Gastonia;
Lexie L. Ray, Greensboro; Representative R.C. Soles, Jr., Tabor City; John B.
Stedman, Charlotte; John A. Tate, Jr., Charlotte; Mrs. Arthur W. Thomas, Jr.,
Concord; Oscar C. Vatz, Fayetteville; Fred L. Wilson, Kannapolis; and J. Shelton

Elected for a four-year term was Walter L. Smith of Charlotte.

UNIVERSITY'S FOUR CAMPUSES AWARD The four campuses of the
DEGREES TO OVER 7,000 GRADUATES University of North Carolina
DURING COMMENCEMENT PROGRAMS awarded degrees to a record-
breaking group of 7,559
graduates during the 1969 commencements. Among the graduates were 5,103 bache¬
lor's degree candidates; 1,756 professional and master's candidates; 437 Ph.D. and
other doctoral candidates; 67 doctors of medicine; 49 doctors of dental science;
and 147 doctors of jurisprudence.
