mond’' iudii'trinl and agricultural
progress than Isaac S. London, edi¬
tor of the in Rocking¬
ham. We asked Ike a short time ago
to prepare II- some data along this
line. With his customary courtesy and
good nature he did so. and hero’s
what he wrote:
Richmond County ranks 3Sth in
size in North Carolina, with 521
square mile* and 3113,440 acres.
In 177!' the county was authorized

was named in honor of Charles Len¬
nox, I 'like of Richmond. The General
Assembly of 17S1 named seven com¬
missioners to fix upon a site for a
county seat for the young county, and
they chose what is now Rockingham
and the streets were officially laid oil
ns of April 1, 1785.
In 178(1 the county population was
listed at 11,585. In I860 it waa

The fourth annual session of tlm
Ilflplist State Convention was held at
Dockery's Meeting House November
1-0. 1833, and that convention direct¬
ed Dr. Samuel Wait to gather funds
and open the new Wake Forest Insti¬
tute in 1S34.
Since 186$ there have liecn 16 sher¬
iffs, and nine Clerks of Court.
At the present time, in 1943, the
county has a woman

woman as County Auditor (Miss
Mary Thomas Covington).
The Chairman of the Board of
Commissioners is Dr. G. C. Caddell.
and the other four members are John
C. Matbeson, Paul Brown, James
Hamer and Arthur Capcl. They have
managed the county wisely, as is
shown by the low county-wide tax-
rate of only 90 cents. The total bonded
