That apparently is the final ilt»sti-
nalion of Catherine Hayes, of Ashe¬
ville. who. at the atfe of I f. already
has heroine one »f the best-known
junior models in New York.

HOLLYWOOD and its gold arc
looming just behind the rain¬
bow for 14-y car-old Cather¬
ine Hayes of Asheville, a golden-
hair, fortune-blessed little lass with
a big smile and a bigger future.
She’s a top-rank New York fash¬
ion model even at sub-deb age. but
her ace in the hole — if angelic
appearing young ladies have such
things — is a modcratcly-fat Holly¬
wood contract calling for movie
roles when she turns a sweet six¬
teen.
Miss Hayes has been acting for
a long time — has been acting and
singing and dancing and entertain¬
ing — but the big upsweep in her
career really came back in 1942
when she captivated a Governor's
conference audience in Asheville,
and in particular caught the eye of
Former-Governor and Mrs. J. Mel¬
ville Broughton.
The Raleigh statesman and his
First Lady forthwith had words
with prominent talent scouts, and
Miss Ilaycs and her mother. Mrs.
John S. Hayes, sought fast passage
to New York. A screen test was
a rousing success, and the only
stipulation was that the Asheville
girl spend her "in-between age"
years in serious study.
A Hollywood Prep Course
Since that time, when she was
only 1 1, Miss Hayes has submerged
herself in a sort of Hollywood prep
course, with time out of late to
strike a mighty pretty pose for
Harry Conover and his interna¬
tionally-known New York model
agency.
THE STATE. July 27. 1046
In dividing her time between
Asheville and New York, she is
finding the trail to Hollywood and
the rainbow's end just about as
alluring as the goal itself.
She likes everybody, everything.
She likes New York— "loves it";
she likes Asheville- thinks it's the
nicest place she knows. She has
long yellow hair and blue eyes and
the personable manner of the cute
kid next door.
The kind of glamor she has is the
real kind — genuine, unaffected, the
kind the lady-like junior miss can
wear as easily as she wears a simple
print dress.
Summers she spends in New
York, and has since 1942. There
she studies voice under Estelle
Liebling, internationally
n
о
w n
voice teacher, and drama under
Claudia Franck, who is also well
known as the teacher of Bing
Crosby. Orson Welles, and Holly¬
wood's new star. Joan Caulfield '
In Asheville she studies regular
high school subjects under Mrs.
Guy Weaver. As one might guess,
she’s a straight A student, and
should finish high school before
she is 16.
Prior to this summer, all her
New York days were devoted basi¬
cally to study. Then Harry Conover
saw her picture and wanted a few
Poses to point up fashion layouts.
Today she’s one of the best sub-
deb models.
Pictures in .Magazines
She’ll have fashion pictures in

a 1" nationally-circulated
magazines within the next few
months, her mother said recently.
One of them will be a full-page
spread in the August issue of “Call¬
ing All Girls,” one of the largest of
sub-deb magazines.
Miss Hayes is now at her home
in Asheville, where she is still re¬
ceiving her share of honors. Early
in July the Kiffin Rockwell lo’f
Asheville ) American Legion post
presented her with a silver loving
cup in appreciation of her services
as official post sweetheart during
the last two years. Mayor L.
Lyons Lee made the presentation,
alter Catherine- as usual — had en¬
tertained the Legionnaires with a
song or two.
Already a local starlet, the little
songstress has long been in demand
on Asheville entertainment pro¬
grams. She has performed at vir¬
tually every Legion program held
recently while she was in Ashe¬
ville. has appeared at civic func¬
tions and before convention
audiences.
Miss Hayes hasn't had her head
turned by either plaudits or ambi¬
tion, but she nourishes a generous
enough share of the latter to keep
her gently nudged along the path
to success.
She says she has always liked
to act and had always hoped some
day to get a movie trial. The 1942
