HAT’S the l*est route to Ashe¬
ville?”
Wo'vo had that question

number of times hy peo¬
ple residing in the eastern part of the
state.
There «re several wavs to go. Tak¬
ing Raleigh ns your starting point,
you can drive to Ch:ij»el Hill. Gra¬
ham. Greensboro, Winston-Salem,
Mooksville, Statesville, Hickory. Mor-
ganton, Marion and on into Ashe¬
ville.
Another way to go is by way of
Pittsboro. Siler City, Ashohoro,
Lexington, Mooksvillr. Statesville,
and then over the same route ns above
to Asheville. We figure that this i*
somewhat shorter than the first route
and you can also make better time
over it became it cuts out Green--
boro and Winston-Salem.
A third way: Pittsboro. Siler City.
Asheboro, Lexington, Salisbury,
Mooresville, Lincolnton, Cherryville,
Shelby, Uuthcrfordton, Chimney
Rock, Hat Gave, and Asheville. That’s
a mighty good way lo go, too. Just
about a mile further than Route No. 2.
An Even Better Route
But we believe that we’ve found nn
even better way. Raleigh to Pitts-

Siler City and A-helmro. Ashe¬
boro to New London. (Or. if you
don’t object to four mile- «»f good
dirt road, you can turn to the right
three miles before you get t*. New
London and come out a) Richfield.

ing that short rut.) New . . Ion t«.

an alternate route when you get to
Lincolnton fono mile longer). Lin¬
colnton to Morgnnton, Marion ami
Asheville. Personally, wo b.dicvo you
con make better time by going via
Shelby. However, there’s room for
argument as to that point.
Traffic naturally is a hie factor to
consider when you're trying to get
somewhere in a hurry, and that’s the
reason we call your attention to that
part of the route between Asheboro
and Mooresville- Richfield, Rock¬
well and China Grove. There's as lit¬
tle traffic over that route as you can
find on any of our main highways
going east and west.
But, regardless of routes, the thing
for you to do this week or next week
is to go to Western North Carolina.
You’ll never lake a trip that you'll
A view down Nantahala Gorge. But
no photograph can begin to describe
the wonderful beauty of red, brown
and golden leaves against a back¬
ground of green.
