He Runs Fairs
And Ur. J. S. Horton lias made a
pronounced and outstanding suc¬
cess in Ills operation of the State
Fair and others.
LAST your the State Department
of Agriculture clrei<le<l t«>
"operate the State Fair ns a state
institution. They selected Dr. J. S.
Dorton. of Shelby, for the job of
running the fair.
And last year, for the first time
in history, if could be truthfully
said that the State Fair was operated
at a protit under North Carolina
Department of Agriculture super¬
vision.
Which means that Dr. Dorton
knows something about fairs.
As a matter of fact, lie knows a
lot about fairs. He started the
Shelby fair in 1024 and has lieen
operating it ever since as manager.
It is a cooperative proposition, with
three hundred or more stockholders.
Dr. Dorton was born on duly 11,
1895, and is a native of Concord,
( 'a barms County. He joined the
veterinary corps in 1018 and was in
charge of the hospital at Camp Lee,
Virginia. It wasn’t long after the
war before he began turning his at¬
tention to the operation of fairs.
Prior to last year, there was some
opposition manifested in connection
with the State again taking over
the operation of the fair at Raleigh.
It was pointed out that previous
fairs, operated under the supervision
of the Department of Agriculture,
had cost North Carolina quite n bit
of money, and that was the reason
why it had been leased to outside
parties. Commissioner Kerr Scott
and his associates, however, believed
that the fair could be operated suc¬
cessfully by the Department. In
looking around for a man to handle
the job. they picked out Dr. Dorton.
Events have proved that the selec¬
tion was a good one.
Dr. Dorton has his own ideas
about running
и
fair. Last year,
for instance, he turned away 50 con¬
cessions because they were of an
undesirable nature. Concessions
bring in an average of $50 apiece,
so you can readily see that the
Doctor let quite a large sum of
money slip through Ids hands. How¬
ever, he feels that good will of
patrons is far more important than
money, and he also knows when
People get gyped at a fair, they are
going to knock the fair from then
on. 1 1 is idea is to get boosters.
The Doctor Inis been president of
the North Carolina Association of
Agricultural Fairs for three years.
lb* is a past president of the
Chamber of Commerce. Shelby.
He is past president of the
К
i wan is Club. Shelby, and has been
on the board of directors ever since
the organization was formed in 1023.
He has been twice commander of
Warren F. Hoyle Post. No. 72.
Shelby, of the American Legion.
He has also
1юеп
president of the
North Carolina Veterinary Medical
Association and is on the board of
examiners of the organization at tin*
present time.
