Doing Very Nicely
Though the boy. won’t tell you
that they are mopping up, they 11
frankly admit that they “arc doing
all right.’’ They’ll proudly relate
that their first bike was rented August
8, 1936, and that since that date
the hu-ines* ha* steadily inerr*-d.
Launching the enterprise with
twelve bike* direct from the factory in
Kngland— into which their №0 wa*
sunk, plus a debt of
«80
on which
there was no security (they consider
that a miracle)— they now have for
sale or rent some twenty of their
’‘Wheel • A way to- Health*’’ — and the
folk and student* of Chapel Hill are
wheeling away.
The bikr* are unique? There i* no
doubt about that. And the Julian
boy. will tell you that they are a
revelation in cycling. Bring geared
on the principle of the automobile,
they have a ‘‘low,’’ a “second,” and
a "high,” to be used when going
uphill, on level, and downhill.
To a newcomer on the vacant lot
behind the postoKce, where the busi-
ne*s thrive* in the open air to the
tune of a blaring radio, the boys will
explain in detail tbe shifting of gear*.
And when that newcomer return* from
hi* first ride. almo*t invariably hi*
enthusiasm burst* forth with a,
“Boy! That gear’, the ain’t
it ! . . *
Anytime tetween nine o’clock in
the morning and ten at night you
can go around behind the postoflicr
and rent one of the geared bike* for
3S cent* an hour, or one without
gear* for 30 cents. Or. should you
be in amorous mood, and have the
lady friend along, there is a two-
—atrd geared contraption, the only
one of it* kind in America, which
may be had for 90 cents; the gentle¬
man in front, please, and the lady
behind. There are time, when they
wail in line for the use of this one.
Too, the invention of the Auto-
Glide. upon which they are shown in
the picture accompanying tbs* article,
wa. highly in their favor. Doubt¬
fully and gingerly they invested $150
in one, but their fear* were won al¬
layed. for at 90 cents an hour, and
with someone just

to ride it.
it soon paid for it— If. They have
two now.
The boys will tell you that during
the first week of their venture they
took in about
$«5;
that one month
