Herewith is a continuation of the series of
articles being written by Pete Murphy and
having to do with North Carolinians who left this
state and made good elsewhere in political or
diplomatic fields.
Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Florida and
Georgia were some of the states which were in¬
cluded in Mr. Murphy’s previous articles. He
now takes you to Illinois, Indiana, Mississippi
and several other states.

Joseph Gurney Cannon
Born in Guilford County.
North Carolina, May 7,
1836, moved to Indiana in
1S40; studied law at the
Cincinnati Law School, ad¬
mitted to practice in 1858 in
Terre Haute, Indiana,
moved to Tuscola. Illinois
in 1859; State's Attorney
from I8H 1 to 1868; elected
to the lower House of Con-
press and served from 1878
to 1891 ; moved to Danville. Illinois, in
1878; again elected to Congress and
served from 1893 to 1913, was Speaker
of the House in the Fifty-eighth, Fifty-
ninth, Sixtieth and Sixty-first Con¬
gresses; received fifty-eight votes for the
presidential nomination at the Republi¬
can National Convention of 1908;
again elected to Congress and served
from 1915 to 1923; declined renomina-
tiou: retired to private life; died 1926

John McLean
Born in Guilford County. North
Carolina, in 1791; moved to Kentucky
in 1791, and to Illinois in 1815; studied
law; upon the admission of Illinois as
a State of the Fnion was elected to the
lower House of Congress, in 1818;
elected to the United States in 1824, re¬
elected in 1829 and served until his
death October 14, 1830.

Ratliff Boon
Born in Franklin County, North
Carolina, in 1781; moved to Kentucky
and theme to Indiana; Lieutenant Gov¬
ernor of Indiana from 1SI9 to 1821.
Governor then until 1822, again elected

MISSISSIPPI
Joseph Henry Beeman
Born in Gates County. North Caro¬
lina, 1833; moved to Mississippi in
1849. received an academic education;
lieutenant C.S.A.; member of legisla¬
ture; elected to the lower House of Con¬
gress. and served from 1891 to 1893;
died 1909.
John Jones McRae
Born in Sncedsboro, North Carolina,
in 1815; moved to Mississippi in 1817;
graduated from Miami University,
Oxford, Ohio, 1834; member of legis¬
lature; speaker of House 1850; ap¬
pointed to the United States Senate to
fill the vacancy caused by the resig¬
nation of Jefferson Davis in 1851 : Gov¬
ernor of Mississippi. 1854-58; elected
to the lower House of Congress, serving
from 1S58 to 1881; elected as a rep¬
resentative from Mississippi in the
( ’on federa to Congress, served from 1862
to 1864; died 1S68.
Vannoy Hartog Manning
Born near Raleigh, North Carolina,
1839; moved to Arkansas, served in the
Confederate Army as Colonel Third
Arkansas Infantry; captured at the
Battle of the Wilderness, remained in
prison until 1865; moved to Mississippi ;
1892.
Hiram Rhodes Revels
Born a slave in Fayetteville, North
Carolina. 1827; graduated from Knox
College. Bloomington. Illinois; moved
to Baltimore; upon the outhcak of the
War Between the States,
organized two negro regi¬
ments in Maryland, chaplain
of a negro regiment in 1864 ;
member of the legislature;
elected to the United States
Senate and eorved from 1870
to 1871; Secretary of State
for Mississippi 1883; died
1901.
Jesse Speight
Born in Greene County,
North Carolina, 1795; mem¬
ber of the legislature of
North Carolina, 1823-1827; elected to
the lower House of Congress from
North Carolina and served from 1829
to 1837; moved to Mississippi; mem¬
ber of the legislature of Mississippi,
1841 to 1844. president of the Senate;
elected to the United States Senate and
served from 1845 until death, 1847.
Jacob Thompson
Born in I-eaeburg, North Carolina,
IMO; graduated from the University
of North Carolina 1831; studied law,
moved to Mississippi ; elected to the
lower House of Congress and served
from 1839 to 1851; appointed Secre¬
tary of the Interior by President Buch¬
anan, serving from 1857 to 1861; in¬
spector General in the Confederate
Army; confidential agent of the Con¬
federacy to Canada; died 1885.
Tilghman Mayfield Tucker
Born near Lime Stone Springs
North Carolina. 1802; moved to Mis
sissippi, studied law; member of legis
lature 1831 to 1841; Governor of Mis
sissippi 1841-43; elected to the lowe
House of Congress, served from 1843
to 1845; died 1859.
John A. Wilcox
Born in Greene County, North Caro¬
lina. 1819; moved to Mississippi; rose
to the rank of lieutenant colonel in the
Mexican War; elected to the lower
House of Congress, served from 1851
to 1853; moved to Texas; member of
Confederate Congress from Texas; died
1864.
Thomas Hill Williams
Born in Surry County, North Caro¬
lina, 17S0, studied law, moved to Mis-
