A YOUTH recently applied to a
merchant in Wilmington for

“Have you any recommendation*!"
the man asked him.
"No. sir." confessed the boy.
“Well. I can't very well hire you
unless you ean give mo some kind of
references.”
The lad shuffled his feet on the floor.
“Mnvbe 1 could get you some," he
finally said.
“I’m afraid it would be too late, be¬
cause I want to hire a boy this morn¬
ing. 1 1 ave you been working anywhere
up to now?”
•*Xo. sir.”
“What have vou been doing after
school hours»”
“Been at the Brigade Boy* Club."
“Why in the world didn’t you say
so before? Here — you can start work
right now. Anybody who belong- to
the Brigade Boys Club doesn't need
any references.”
That was an actual occurrence, and
it tends to show what the people of
Wilmington think of this truly great
organization within their midst.

along about the turn of the century it
became imperative that a club build¬
ing with increased facilities bo had.
Accordingly, in 1001. the present stone
building at Second and Church streets
was constructed and presented to the
Club by Mrs. Harry M. Flagler, as a
memorial to her father, William Rand
Kenan. It was dedicated in 1905, by
Governor Glenn, of Xortli Carolina.
