unspoiled seafaring village is easily
accessible; no law east of Beaufort, but
It’s highly lawful.
"There is no law east of Beaufort."
says Clayton Fulcher of Atlantic. No
mayors, jaypccs, constables, local
taxes. Atlantic, a village of over S00,
is incorporated, but about 25 or 30
years ago the people got tired of elect¬
ing officials who had nothing to do and
abandoned their municipality.
Yet, Atlantic is peaceful, hasn’t seen
a real drunk in many years, has only
two welfare cases in town, has a fine
school and churches.
Every home in town is occupied by
its owner, and they are neat and well
kept. An air of well-being hangs over
the old town, which once was called
Hunting Quarters. It probably is over
200 years old.
It is at the eastern end of U.S. 70
(which goes across the country to the
Pacific Ocean) and is built in a heavy
grove of trees facing on Core Sound.
The little harbor is busy with shrimp
and fish boats coming to and fro; three
seafood places buy. ice and ship. The
"Dolphin" (mail and passengers, but

p.m. for Portsmouth and Ocracokc.
It is operated by Anslcy O'Neal, a
young Outer Banker. He carries a lot
of Ocracoke's supplies — all of its
bread. Fare to the "Oisland" is $2
(SI for children).
Pleasant sights greet the eye at At¬
lantic. For instance, the use of old
fish nets as chicken wire for fences—
very arty. The houses are distinctive.
When an Atlantic family enlarges its
house, it doesn't build on an ell like
most rural families do. It joins the
addition at the side with a connect¬
ing porch or breeze way.
The big industry is Fulcher's sea¬
food place, one of the largest in the
South. It has shipped as many as
100,000 pounds of shrimp in a week,
and one day paid one fisherman
$8,800 lor a catch of 335.00(1 spot
taken from the sound.
In a good season, an Atlantic
shrimper can make from $300 to $400
a day for his share.
The people in Atlantic are leisurely,
friendly and interesting. But they are
not bueolic. Education is a big thing
