Here's a first-hand report on what's
happening to the northeast portion of
our waterfront. If you begin at the Vir¬
ginia line, things arc desolate. Large
chunks of beach arc being held in in¬
dividual or corporate ownership, and
there is absolutely no development of
any kind north of Southern Shores.
The toll-road, proposed to run from
Virginia Beach down the Currituck
Bank, is not dead, but it will take a
lot of doing to get it going again.
Around Corolla. Ray Adams of Wash¬
ington has valuable holdings, including
his fabulous Whalcshcad Club.
S55 a Foot
Ocean front property in Southern
Shores has been sold off steadily.
Frank Stick and his associates — N.
П.
Aydlctt and John McMullan, both of
Elizabeth City, have sold off about
3 miles of their AVi miles of beach
front. The northern end of this de¬
velopment will be sold slowly, about
15 or 20 ocean lots per year. A lot
or two, now up for resale, will cost
you about $55 per front foot, or $5,-
500 for the minimum 100-foot front.
Last year, they sold for $3,500. Back
from the beach, where hard-surface
streets have been laid in some areas,
lots arc obtainable for from $800 to
$1,000.
A high ridge runs back some dis¬
tance from and parallel to the beach,
and homes built on this sand dune
have a very fine view of beach and
ocean.
Next step in this development will
be on the sound side, where it is
planned to provide public docking fa¬
cilities for small pleasure craft. Of the
Southern Shores property. 1 .400 acres
is in woodlands. Something will have
to be done about mosquitoes back
here, but a thorough and widespread
spraying program should control them.
Room Aplenty
This is one of the better develop¬
ments. Stick is leaving ample elbow
room to keep the residences from jost¬
ling one another. At intervals, 300 feet
of beach space arc being set aside
for use of cottagers who build back
from the water, and this feature pre¬
serves an air of spaciousness in the
settlement — an air all too often lack¬
ing in cubby-hole real estate promo¬
tion. Too many of our promoters arc
trying to squeeze every penny they can
out of acreage by selling off 25 and
50-foot building sites.
Southern Shores is building small
wading and fishing ponds for children,
and a recreation building for teen¬
agers is in the works. Stick feels that
lack of recreation for this group is a
blind spot in our beach development.
Meantime, a clubroom addition is
planned at the Sea Ranch, the devel¬
opment’s only accommodations unit.
It had a good season in 1953.
Southern Shores starts at the junc¬
tion of highway 15S and the ocean,
and extends 4 Vi miles north. North of
that, there are sonic individual lots
on which you may sec some building
as soon as a road reaches to them.
FARM HOUSE
No reports on it have been received,
but I notice that the Farmhouse Res¬
taurant has opened on the Bclmont-
Mt. Holly Highway, a half mile north
