Charlotte's Carrousel
They built a big event around a
football game in the queen eity; half
a million people expected to see the
parades.
The South Carolina-NVakc Forest
football game is now "The Carrousel
Bowl" in Charlotte on November 26,
1953, at 2:00 p.m. as a part of the
giant Carolines' Carrousel.
Early in 1947 a group of Charlotte
men sal around a luncheon table
and someone said, "Let's organize an
event for Charlotte, and invite our
neighbors to participate. Let us stage
the event and when it’s all over, we
will clean the dishes. For once, let's
ask them into Charlotte and not ask
them to buy." Thus the Carolinas'
Carrousel was born, which is today
the South's largest attraction as far as
parades arc concerned, with over
550.000 in attendance last year.
The event this year will be staged
on Thanksgiving Day, after some
thirty-five princesses, and many celeb¬
rities including a Hollywood star join
in preliminary arrangements of the
Wednesday before.
This year the Hcgcman (100
strong) Siring Band, winner of first
prize ($20,000) in the 1953 Mum¬
mers Parade in Philadelphia, will lead
the giant four-mile all-decorated pa¬
rade at 5:30 p.m. Costumes, plumed
head-pieces reach eight feet above the
heads of the String Band group whose
uniforms arc valued at $160,000.
The event invites thirty-five high
school seniors from nearby cities to
participate in the contest of Queen
Carrousel. No Charlotte girls com¬
pete. The young Queen will be royally
entertained and honored at the
Knights of Carrousel affair on Wednes¬
day night before. The one hundred
Knights making up the group arc
staging their record annual affair; a
giant coronation all in medieval cos¬
tumes; a King, court and jesters will
high-light the occasion. Each Knight
will be tapped at the event; the King
and Queen will be crowned; an elabo¬
rate medieval day buffet will be served
at intermission. The affair is strictly
by invitation subscription. One promi¬
nent North Carolinian and one promi¬
nent South Carolinian will be made
Honorary Dukes at the affair.
The pageant parade will be held at
5:30 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. No¬
vember 26. over a 40-block lighted
white-way, over 140 units will make
up the ten-division, all-dccoratcd
parade.
THAT S. C. TREND
From 60 to 80 per cent of the
travel business in the Nags Head re¬
gion comes from the Washington area.
Quite a chunk of it conics from mid-
Virginia. The rest is scattered all
around. Hardly anybody comes to
Nags Head from the territory west and
south of Raleigh.
This is easy to understand. It is a
long way to the northeast beaches
from Piedmont North Carolina —
about a 6-liour drive from Raleigh,
for example.
Alas, I only wish that our mid-
coast and southeastern beaches were
getting that patronage. They arc get-
