Bij OLD TRUDGE
A real ocean highway which, with
ferries, would open most of the sea-
coast of North Carolina to motorists,
is the dream of the Morehcad City
Chamber of Commerce. Even its spon¬
sors admit that such a toad is a long
way from approval, but they take the
position that a start has to be made
somewhere, and they're making it.
Actually, it wouldn't take a lot to
provide the missing link. The new road
down Hattcras Bank is completed. U.S.
70 picks up at Atlantic, on the Car¬
teret mainland.
To make a highway all the way from
Nags Head to join up with U.S. 70 at
Atlantic would require only 18 or 20
miles of paved highway on Oeracoke
Island, and two auto ferries — one be¬
tween Hattcras and Oeracoke. one be¬
tween Oeracoke and Atlantic.
No large sum is involved, but the
maintenance of a road on low lying
Oeracoke would be a major problem,
much larger. I am told by engineers,
than the one involving the present
road to Hattcras.
Ocean highway advocates reply that
an inexpensive hard surface, laid flush
on the sand, probably would require
constant renewal and renovation, but
that such a fluxing road with renew¬
al. would cost no more over the years
than an expensive, stable mountain
road, and revenue from traffic would
repay the costs many times over.
Interest in the highway, which I
think first was agitated by Joe Du¬
bois. has increased since the National
Seashore project was approved. Inter¬
ests lying on the mainland south of the
Outer Banks figure that such a com¬
munications system would give visitors
a great circle route through the most
historic region in the south, and both
travelers and the state would benefit
from the dispersion of this traffic over
a wider area.
The map shows present highways in
solid lines — the missing links in
broken lines.
DRIVING SERVICE
For those who do not want the re¬
sponsibility of mountain driving,
there is a driver sight-seeing service
at Hot Springs for such trips as rides
to Rich Mountain, up Paint Creek,
and other points. Picnic boxes avail¬
able. too. Information from Tweed’s
Court.
FIFTEEN PARTY BOATS
Sport fishermen going to Southport
this year will find 15 boats available
for fishing — in-shore or Gulf Stream.
