OLD TRUDGE
A fishing frontier, too remote and
obscure for the average sportsman,
nevertheless is steadily gaining fans
and fame. This is Core Banks, off the
Carteret coast, and extending from
Portsmouth on the north to Cape Look¬
out on the south, where it terminates
with Barden’s Drain and Shackleford
Banks.
It is primarily for channel bass surf
casters, and the big season is from
August to December. So far, the most
simple kind of accommodations are
available, but they are adequate for
the hardy, and enjoy a growing clien¬
tele.
A large number of guides at Mark¬
er’s Island will take surf casters over
to Core Bank in the vicinity of the
Cape. We understand there are house¬
keeping accommodations in an old
coast guard station, now owned by
Captain Kelly Willis. I suggest you
write to Captain Jim Harkcr. Harker's
Island, before making your trip from
this point.
You also can take off from Davis,
which is farther east on U.S. 70. A
number of guides take parlies from
here, and at least two of them. Sterling
Dixon and Ammie Willis, have cabins
for rent on the beach. Address cither
at Davis.

farther to the north at Drum Inlet,
perhaps the hottest fall and winter
surf casting spot in the cast. Ira Mor¬
ris. who we hear is the granddaddy of
surf casting at this point, has cabins
for about 50 on the north side of the
Inlet. Avon Mason. Atlantic, has new
cottages in the same general loca¬
tion. South of the inlet there are two
new cabins owned by Walter Mason.

Some sportfishermen already are
pushing up the banks. Swash Inlet
(on some maps as Myrtle Inlet) is
one place virtually unknown, and the
shallow drain flows only at high tide.
However, the beach here is highly fish-
able. and Wilbert Nelson of Atlantic
