Fishy Business
Over 80.000 large sport fish taken
by fishermen sailing out of More-
head City.
By OLD TRUDGE
A record, painstakingly kept by
C. W. Stevens for Ottis Purifoy at
Morchead City, has taken a lot of the
guess work out of estimates of the
extent of sport fishing in the Cape
Lookout area.
According to this count, 81,748
large game fish were landed in the five
months ending October 28 by fisher¬
men aboard boats docked at Morchead.
If you were to count the blues, porgies,
black fish, Spanish mackerel, sailor's
choice, sea trout and other small fish,
the figure would be astronomical, but
Stevens totaled up only the larger
species.
This is fine business. For several
years. Old Trudge has been asking
sport fishing interests to keep some
dependable records of catches, and at
one time there was even a movement
Ottis Purifoy, Morchead City, who
kept the first actual count of a season's
catch of sport fish on the N. C. coast,

won by G. 1. Todd, Winston-Salem.

on foot to hire a professional guide
to fish just for the record. Now Puri¬
foy, who runs the largest fleet of sport
craft in North Carolina, has done the
job voluntarily, and the record will
be of interest and value to a host of
people.
King mackerel, also known as cero,
was the most numerous catch, totalling
28,124, and weighing 5 to 38 pounds
each. Albaeorc, weighing from 8 to
20 pounds, accounted for 21,140
о
the total, and dolphin, from 5 to 28
pounds, added 14,740.
It might astonish you to know that
the highly desirable red snapper, weigh¬
ing 3 to 38 pounds, was landed to the
number of S.I48 and there were 3,699
bonita, weighing 8 to 15 pounds.
Ambcrjack, 15 to 35 pounds,
totalled 5.532. There were also 16
cabio, the largest 62 pounds, and 12
sailfish, the largest 9 feet in length.
Now, mates, that is fishing. 1 doubt
that any North Carolinian, even
seasoned sportsmen, had any idea that
such a catch was going on this year,
and every year, for that matter. Most
of the species arc edible, and very
little of this food was wasted this year.
The days are gone when fish were
thrown overboard or left to spoil.
