sive residents are proud of the fact
that during the fearful feur-vear pe¬
riod of World-wide depression, whose
end began with the advent of the
Roosevelt New Deal administration a
little more than a year ago, there ha*
not been a single business failure iu
the city, a record which they claim
cannot be equalled, or even ap¬
proached, by any other municipality
within the confines of the state.

financial storm* of the past few years,
emerging unscathed from the rigor*

the purging of all institutions which

Of Historic Interest
The historical lore of North Wilkcs-
horo is quite interesting. The land on
which the city now stand* once was
owned by the father of Daniel Boone's
wife. That intrepid pioneer played
a large part iu reclaiming the wilder¬
nesses of this ami other states for
civilization, and his name and those
of his brave and hardy associate, are
mentioned with reverence iu the cities
and towns which now dot the territory
he lielped to reclaim from Indian*,
wild beast* and the many other dan¬
gers that confronted them.
Another achievement of
which North Wilkcsboro'*
citizen* are proud is that
the eitv is one of only six
in North Carolina to vote
additional funds for sup¬
plementing a state-wide, state-support¬
ed eight-months' public school term.
When that issue was decided with bal¬
lots. it was shown in no uncertain
terms that an adequate education for
their children paraniOUlitcd in the
mind* of the city's fathers and moth¬
ers an inconsiderable financial outlay.
The educational standards of North
Wilkcslioro’s schools, considering the
size of municipality, are not surpassed
by those of any North Carolina city.
The industrial activities of North
Wilkcuhoro are many and varied. In
and about the eitv are numerous
plants, all locally owned, which,
through their diversity of products,
provide ample payrolls for their many
employees throughout the entire year.
All of the manufacturing plants employ
local labor altogether.
Among the factories are n tannery,
saw mill, grist mill, oliaii factory, four
