Little Washington
And Show Biz
How a couple of stranded carnival
performer» remodeled a lumber
barge and made theatrical history.

to form, the readership from across the
nation was far more dedicated than it
was in Carolina. And R. C. Nanny, a
former radio personality and local
small businessman, immediately
began to produce Knobby tee shirts
and even recorded a song, a folk bal¬
lad. about Knobby.
And. finally, a movie company de¬
cided to produce a film about the
creature and his ostensible threats to
the community.
Knobby, being the sensitive and in¬
telligent animal that he must undoubt¬
edly be. decided it was that time of
year, and he pulled out and left. And.
as usual, he was not seen or heard
during the entire spring and summer.
Winter Arrival
But now that winter is here, it's time
for him to return, as he has a history of
doing. Of course, there may be a logi¬
cal explanation for his habits, if indeed
there is such a critter (and ministers,
businessmen, housewives, students,
workers, and salesmen have declared
that they have seen him).
The spring and summer months are
months of chiggers, ticks, briars, in¬
sects of all sorts, and. above all.
snakes. The South Mountain area is
well known for its abundance of rattle¬
snakes and copperheads, and most
people prefer the golf course to the
rugged mountainous terrain.
Then. too. the foliage in winter is
gone and visibility is much greater:
similarly, more hunters and other out-
doorsmen are in the woods and in bet¬
ter locations to see the animal.
It will be an interesting winter.
Tracking Knobby in the snow, fol¬
lowing up on all the latest rumors, and
hoping that somebody doesn't get shot
while searching for him. the South
Mountaineers will be again trying to be
the first people in recorded history to
capture and prove to the world that
there really is a Bigfoot and that
Knobby, his Carolina cousin, is among
the best of the lot.

Washington. North Carolina, has
always been known as a political town
and for good reason. We can boast of a
Secretary of the Navy, the Honorable
Josephus Daniels: United States As¬
sistant Attorney General. Angus D.
MacLean: Governor Daniel Fowle in
1889; Lindsey Warren, an outstanding
Congressman and later America's
Comptroller General: and innumerable
politicians at the state level.
But we are equally proud of our
contributions to the entertainment
world. Washington was the home of
Cecil B. and William B. DeMille. Also.
Norman Cordon of Metropolitan
Opera fame grew up in our town. So. it
was no surprise to me when one day as
I walked down Broadway. I saw the
names of two local boys up in lights on
the marquees. Murray Hamilton had a
second lead in the play Mr. Roberts (I
believe in the world of show business,
it is called second banana). Norman
Cordon had left the Metropolitan
Opera and had the lead in Street Scene.
Another local talent is Eugene Bonner,
a noted composer whose orchestral
and chamber music has been per¬
formed in London. Paris. Brussels and
Geneva.
