It was a supreme compliment for this
rare man who at age NO was still living
life to the hilt, and for whom every
new experience was an adventure to
be met with gusto. I hat's the way it still
was at age 83.
I he State of North Carolina is for¬
tunate indeed that Carl Goerch, a na¬
tive of Tarry town. New York, came
South, found a land to match his ebul¬
lient spirit, and stayed on to sing the
praises of North Carolina to the world
by newspaper, radio, television, the
speaker's circuit, and by this magazine,
which he founded in 1933. (The

Carl's love affair with North Carolina
first blossomed in 1915. and never
waned. I rue. he qualified as a cosmop¬
olite. having visited 52 foreign coun¬
tries and every state of the U.S.A. (on
one trip he took a long detour just to set
toot in Alaska). But these junkets were
often occasions for public speaking, and
always an opportunity to spread the
good word about North Carolina. As
long as he lived — and to anybody who
w'ould listen — he offered his personal
testimony to the wonderful people and
resources for good living in the Old
North Stale.
It was not a one-sided affair.

Heels by the thousands — no, hundreds
of thousands — thought of Carl as a
friend, even though they may never
have met him.
If it is a truism that obvious blessings
are the hardest to count, then Carl
Gocrch's greatest service to North Car¬
olina was that he came from afar into
a region sometimes called the "Valley
of Humility" and aroused the people's
pride and interest in themselves, their
history, and their environment.
It was a role in which brilliant phi¬
losophers. teachers, and statesmen may
have sunk by the weight and eloquence
of their own arguments. Carl Goerch
caught and held their interest with
anecdotes, unusualities. and his own
robust brand of humor. He spoke to
