Salaries of Stale Employes
North Carolina’s public servants
aren’t doing so badly, so
Гаг
as income
is concerned. Since 1949, the salaries
paid officials and employes have in¬
creased anywhere from 60 per cent to
165 per cent. In those 15 years, cost of
living has risen tremendously, too. and
in some cases the increase in salaries
has not kepi pace with increased ex¬
penses.
Still and all. the President of the
UNC gets 525.000 a year— the same as
the governor and while by present
standards this isn’t a rich man's income,
it is substantial when compared with
income of the average North Caro¬
linian on private payroll.
Under him are a string of employes
making from SI 5.000 to $20.000 a
year. The following table shows the
salaries fixed by the governor and the
advisory budget commission.
Most of these employes received an
increase Sept. I. 1963. but a few have
not had increases in several years, go¬
ing back to 1959. Also, a few increases
were made on Jan. I. 1964.
It should be noted that these figures
are as of Jan. I. 1964. Since then, sev¬
eral increases have been given. The
UNC president has been raised to $25.-
000. and the Wildlife Commission head
has been raised from $12.500 to $15.-
000. for example. The university chan¬
cellors were upped by $3.000 and now
make $23.000. However, we decided to
use the official Jan. I. 1964. figures
rather than try to make spotty correc¬
tions.
