year which started uncertainly developed into a prosperous and happy 1961 for most North Carolinians. There was a
tremendous volume of construction — both in new enterprises and expansions. Agricultural and business incomes rose.
Here is the evidence, county by county, as reported by people on the scene:
Alamance
Alamance County hit a peak in industrial
development and other growth during 1961.
Industrial buildings or expansions included:
Knysfr-koth Hosiery Co., new plant.
207,000 square feel; Holt Hosiery Co..
finishing plant. 50,000 square feet; Koury
Hosiery Co., new plant. 40,000 square feet;
Wcbco Mills. new plant. 60,000 square
feet; Copland Fabrics, expansion. 24.000
square feet: Machine Mfg. Co.. 6.000 square
feet; Willard Industries, new plant, 40.000
square feet: Lcath Hosiery Co., expanded;
Superior Stone Co., started a quarry and
work about 30 people.
These and a few other small industrial
buildings and expansions total approximately
one-half million square feet of floor space
at a cost of more than S3

million and
will work between 1,200-1,500 people when
in full operation.
The new Memorial Hospital opened with
100 beds.
A tax re-evaluation program was com¬
pleted and the tax rate adjusted: Burlington
l.akc with a storage capacity of 3 billion
gallons and a marina were put into opera¬
tion; Burlington and Graham voted and put
into operation ABC stores.
Times-News Publishing Company added
approximately 5,400 square feet of floor
space and renovated their building. Tate
Horton and J. Nim Harris purchased the
old Lakeside Mill and have renovated the
building and will add new employees.
Total building permits for 1961 will ex¬
ceed $7 million.
