But They Won’t Pay
Many an investor is fooled by appar¬
ent market for expensive food and
entertainment.

In going into a town after a long
absence, it often is necessary to ask
a lot of fool questions to strike the
trail of what's been happening.
One question we ask is "How do the
people around here make a living?"
and we ask it whether we know the
answer or not. In Rowland the other
day the boy gassing up my car re¬
plied: "We have just one crop around
here." “What's that?" "Farming," he
replied.

Another good conversation starter
is "Where can I get a good meal here?"
and “What do you folks do for fun?"
Strangely enough, hardly anyone
will give an answer reflecting credit on
their town. It doesn't matter whether
the town is large or small, most peo¬
ple will say apologetically:
"You know, we need a good place
to cat around here," and
"There’s nothing to do in this burg."
And nine times out of ten they arc
wrong. People apparently get tired of
the local fare, and think the place in
the next town has better food. But to
a visitor, the local restaurant usually
is pretty good: sometimes exceptional.
As to recreation, there often is
"more to do" than the citizens can af¬
ford or get around to. Of course, they
have in mind metropolitan attractions,
like zoos, museums, athletic contests,
dramatic productions. But it is our ob¬
servation that people living in New

York, for example, spend little or no
time in such places, and they think
out-of-towners who "go out" on Broad¬
way are boobs and suckers, which they
arc.
In the second place, the majority of
people won’t support the type recrea¬
tion they seem to yearn for. Promoters
who have been misled by grumbling
arc painfully aware of this.
The citizens say that a high-class
restaurant would pay in Hometown,
but after eating there once or twice,
they arc back at the Main Street Grill.
They can’t afford to pay S4 to S6 a
plate for meals. And they can’t afford
to go regularly to some place of amuse¬
ments where admission is charged.
They can't afford it in New York and
they can’t afford it in Durham. They
wouldn’t go even if they could afford it,
for most people have family and or¬
ganization duties and pleasures to oc¬
cupy them.
It is only on a vacation or holiday
jaunt that the average American family
says "hang the cost." The success of re¬
sort enterprises is what deceives the ob¬
server. and even business set up to catch
the away-from-home tripper isn’t always
successful.
But the fiction that pleasure estab¬
lishments or high-priced eating places
will draw immense local crowds per¬
sists and it will continue to trap en¬
thusiastic people into making foolish
investments.
MOTEL CENTER
Statesville is getting to be the center
of fine motels. Latest is the 36-unit
Statesville Motor Lodge, a de luxe es¬
tablishment at corner of Interstate 40
and U.S. 21.
It has a distinction we hadn't heard
of before. Core of the court arc pre¬
fabricated units, built in F.lkhart, Ind.
The units arrived in half-room sec¬
tions complete inside except for car¬
pets. TV sets and air conditioners.
The new motel, owned by local in¬
vestors, will be managed by Mr. and
Mrs. W. L. Duke, who also manage
the Howard Johnson Restaurant next
door.

when tourist spending generally was
more modest.
