The Towns of
Cleveland
Boiling Springs
The Cleveland Country Club
Boiling Springs is chiefly known as
the seat of Gardncr-Webb Junior Col¬
lege (formerly Boiling Springs High
School), but it also is a municipality
in its own right. While the college, of
course, is the big "business" of the
little South Cleveland town, it has a
briskly patronized retail section, a
bank, fire department, hospital, and
a couple of industries — a small yarn
plant and the Cleveland Sandwich
Company. The latter distributes sand¬
wiches and other food items all over
western North Carolina.
The 1960 population is 1.309. a
14.3 per cent rise over 1950.
Lawndale
Cleveland Mills, established in 1888
by Major H. F. Schenck. are still oper¬
ating on the original site at Lawndale.
It imports manila from Denmark, and
jute and sisal, to make cordage and
twines as well as other textile prod¬
ucts. One of the largest tag cord manu¬
facturers in the country, it also makes
seine cords, parcel post twines, kite
cords, mop heads, jump ropes, ski rop¬
ing and wood glue.
The town is on the banks of the
Broad River, and contains a school,
branch bank, several stores and filling
stations, churches, and a fire depart¬
ment.
Mooresboro
Mooresboro, another of Cleveland’s
numerous rural centers, established the
first creamery in North Carolina in
1909. Today it has a school, a few
stores and a residential section.
Lattimore
Latlimore is a small village with a
big store — the curious supermarket,
general store and antique business of
John Bell. A good-sized feed mill also
is in operation here.
Grover
Grover, almost on the South Caro¬
lina line, is the home of Minettc Mills,
makers of chenille bedspreads, woven
bedspreads, and furniture upholstery.
Here also arc offices of a large sub
station of Transcontintal Gas Pipe
Liner Corporation.
Waco
Waco is a settlement built around a
large school — a village within a settle¬
ment. and apparently at one time more
flourishing. It has some small stores
and residences.
Karl
Earl is a village on L'.S. 29 south
of Kings Mountain, and is the closest
community to the huge new Fibre In¬
dustries plant. It is built up on both
sides of the tracks of the Southern
Railway and has a school, churches.
