100 Milestones of 1969
How about some good news to round out
a year which lias had its share of the
other kind? Here it is. county-by-county,
as it has come to us from all over North
Carolina.

ALAMANCE
The building boom continues in Ala¬
mance County. Total value of building
permits issued through July, 1969, for Bur¬
lington alone amounted to S 10,887.450, as
compared to $5,545,759 for the same period
of 1968, an increase of 96.3 per cent.
Wachovia Bank and Trust Co. has pur¬
chased the 500 block of South Main Street
in downtown Burlington and has an¬
nounced plans to construct a new bank
building, hirst Union National Bank is con¬
structing a new office in Burlington's Cen¬
tral Business District. The new $3
million Transportation Division complex of
Burlington Industries, Inc., was completed.
It contains a 45,000 sq. ft. Trucking Termi¬
nal, a 33,000 sq. ft. shop, a 135.000 sq. ft.
warehouse and 22,000 sq. ft. of general
office space.
Holly Hill, a 537,000 sq. ft., air con¬
ditioned. fully enclosed shopping mall,
opened in August with over 50 stores and
shops. Others are expected to go in later.
Zayre’s Department Store has opened at
Spoon Plaza Shopping Center, and con¬
struction is continuing on this SI. 5 million
project. Construction is also underway on
the new $2.5 million

-Mart Plaza Shop¬
ping Center. Completion of Manor Plaza,
a 12,500 sq. ft. shopping area in Burlington,
is expected by the first of the year. A new
120-unit Ramada Inn Motel, with a 10.000
sq. ft. restaurant, is now under construction.
Shecrspan Products, a manufacturer of
expanded yarns, has moved into a new
34,400 sq. ft. building to more than triple
personnel and production. Coble Dairy
Products has also moved into expanded
facilities. Construction has begun on a new
$300,000 addition to Long Finishing Mills,
Inc., over 21,000 sq. ft. A new 50.000 sq. ft.
addition to the J. Spencer Love Hosiery
Center of Burlington Industries, Inc., is
underway, also a new addition to House
Fabrics of Burlington Industries. Leath
Hosiery Mills, Inc., has completed a new
60.000 sq. ft. hosiery finishing plant.
During 1969. Carolina Biological Supply
Co. constructed a two-story. 22.000 sq. ft.
laboratory addition at a cost of $230,000.
Southeastern Foam Products, a producer
of polystyrene insulation material, com¬
menced operations in a 10,000 sq. ft. build¬
ing. The new Edgewood Manor Nursing
Home is under construction. Lowe’s of
Burlington has begun construction of a new
$120.000 building.
Burlington’s new $400.000 Headquarters
Fire Station is complete. The new dormitory-
cafeteria at Elon College was completed,
and another multi-story dormitory is pres¬
ently under construction. The Technical
Institute of Alamance has initiated a $325,-
000 addition to its present facilities. Con¬
struction has also begun on the new $2
million Cummings Senior High School, and
the ultra-modern Saxapahaw Elementary
School was completed in 1969.
Numerous apartment buildings have been
completed during the year and others arc
under construction. There are over 350 pub¬
lic housing units planned or under con¬
struction in Burlington and Graham. Work
is underway on the widening and improve¬
ment of North Church Street, a $1 million
project. The Alamance County Council of
Governments has been formed and is now
functioning.
According to the latest issue of Sales
Management Magazine’s Survey of Buying
Power. Retail Sales in Alamance County
totaled SI 45,330.000, an increase of S 1 3,-
530.000 over the previous year. Sales con¬
tinue to increase at an unprecedented rate.
Alamance County ranks 1 Ith in North
Carolina in Retail Sales.
In Graham a 43.66-acre tract of land
was approved for annexation. Bids were
