Eight letters exchanged between Alexander Elmsly, London merchant
and agent for the colonial assembly in North Carolina, and Samuel Johnston,
Edenton, are dated January 21 and May 26, 1769 (the latter has a portion
missing; the complete text is published in Colonial Records): November 7,
1770; July 27, 1771; March 24, May 9, September 23, and December 2, 1774;
(date of last letter is cited as December 22 in Colonial Records) . (CR,
