No. Federal Project No. B-3841 8.2371201 33289.1.1 BRSTP-1 138 (10) Project Description: The purpose of this project is to replace Granville County Bridge No. 83 on SR 1 138 over the Tar River. Bridge No. 83 is 140 feet long. The replacement structure will be a bridge approximately 165 feet long providing a minimum 30.8333 feet clear deck width. The bridge will include two 12-foot lanes and 3.4167-foot offsets. The bridge length is based on preliminary design information and is set by hydraulic requirements. The roadway grade of the new structure will be approximately 4-foot above the existing structure. The approach roadway will extend approximately 370 feet from the south end of the new bridge and 160 feet from the north end of the new bridge. The approaches will be 24-foot wide pavement providing two 12-foot lanes. Six-foot grass shoulders will be provided on each side (9-foot shoulders where guardrail is included). The roadway will be designed using Sub Regional Tier guidelines with a 60 mile per hour design speed. Traffic will be detoured off-site during construction (see Figure 1). Purpose and Need: NCDOT Bridge Management Unit records indicate Bridge No. 83 has a sufficiency rating of 49.7 out of a possible 1 00 for a new structure. Steel crutch bents have been added giving the bridge a higher than anticipated sufficiency rating. The bridge is considered structurally deficient due to superstructure condition appraisal of 4 out of 9 and according to Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) standards and therefore eligible for FHWA’s Highway Bridge Program. The bridge also meets the criteria for functionally obsolete due to a deck geometry appraisal of 2 out of 9. Components of both the concrete superstructure and substructure have experienced an increasing degree of deterioration that can no longer be addressed by maintenance activities. The bridge is currently not posted for legal load limit. The bridge has reached the end of its useful life. Replacement of the bridge will result in safer traffic operations.
