A Brief History of the Randolph County Chapter
American Red Cross.
The beginning of the Red Cross organization in Randolph
County was a mass meeting held in Asheboro in May 1917 when the
following men explained the different phases of Red Cross Work:
Major Wade H. Phillips, of Lexington, N. C., Capt. B. F. Dixon,
of Co. K. National Guard, Asheboro, N. C., Dr. J. F. Miller,
Dr. C. W. Jennings and Hon. W. C. Hammer. The necessary steps
to obtain a charter were taken and on may 17, 1917 the Randolph
County Chapter A. R. C. eas organized with the following officers:
Chairman, Dr. F. E. Asbury, Vice Chairman, Mrs. W. A. Underwood,
Secretary, Miss Brona Coble, Treasurer,F. E. Byrd. These of-
ficers, together with the following constituted the Executive
Committee: Miss Esther Ross, Mrs. W. C. Hammer, Mrs. J. F.
Miller, Miss Julia Thorn, F. G. Grimes and H. M. Worth.
The first committee to be appointed was one to solicit mem-
bers throughout the County and to give publicity to the organ-
ization, Mrs. W. C. Hammer was chairman of this committee.
Mrs. Hammer edits the leading county paper which makes her
peculiarly fitted for this work, and is at all times vitally
intereste in anything which makes for the upbuilding of her
county.
Miss Bertha Cox was named as chairman of the town member-
ship committee. Miss Cox is a young lady prominent in the so-
cial and church activities of the town.
Meetings were held once a week for a time, after that, at
the call of the Chairman.
One June 25th Dr. F. E. Asbury resigned as Chairman, and
Mrs. W. A. Underwood, most capably filled the vacancy until
July 14th, when Mr. H. N. Robins a prominent lawyer and County
Attorney was elected chairman.
The June 1917 War Fund Drive was handled through the Red
Cross Chapter and resulted in the collection of $392.86 of
which Chapter received 250/0.
The following branches were organized from time to time:

Treasurer, Miss Maude Phillips, Secretary, Miss Jewel Parking.
