H.B. 403 CHAPTER 293
AN ACT TO FIX THE SALARIES OF CERTAIN ELEC¬
TIVE OFFICIALS, AND THE ADJUTANT GENERAL.
AN APPOINTIVE OFFICER.
Whereas, the salaries of certain elective state officials wore
materially reduced by the General Assembly of one thousand
nine hundred and thirty-three; and
Whereas, the salaries of officers named in the Constitution
could not be altered during their tenure of office: Now,
there fore,
The General Assembly of North Carolina do enact:
SECTION 1. That the compensation of the Commissioner of
Agriculture, the Commissioner of Labor and the Insurance Com¬
missioner, and the Adjutant General shall be forty-five hun¬
dred ($1,500.00) dollars per annum.
Sec. 2. That all laws and clauses of laws in conflict with
the provisions of this act be and the same are hereby re¬
pealed.
Sec. 3. That this act shall be in full force and effect from
and after July first, one thousand nine hundred thirty-live.
Ratified this the 4th day of May, A. D. 1935.

AN ACT TO AMEND SECTIONS FOUR THOUSAND SIX
HUNDRED FIFTY-SEVEN AND FOUR THOUSAND SIX
HUNDRED FIFTY-EIGHT OF THE CONSOLIDATED
STATUTES SUBSTITUTING DEATH BY ADMINISTRA¬
TION OF LETHAL GAS FOR DEATH BY ELECTROCU¬
TION IN NORTH CAROLINA.
The General Assembly of North Carolina do enact:
Section 1. That section four thousand six hundred and
fifty-seven of the Consolidated Statutes be amended to read as
follows :
“4657. Death by Administration of Lethal Gas. Death by
electrocution under sentence of law is hereby abolished and
death by the administration of Lethal Gas substituted there¬
for.”
Sec. 2. That Section four thousand six hundred and fifty-
eight of the Consolidated Statutes be amended by striking out
the first four lines down to and including the word “dead”
in line four and inserting in lieu thereof the following: “The
mode of executing a death sentence must in every case be by
