SMALL FARMS WEEK AND SMALL FARMERS’ APPRECIATION DAY
2012
BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA
A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, North Carolina’s small farms are an important part of our state’s rich agricultural
heritage; and
WHEREAS, through the years, small farms have survived economic and technological changes to
provide a rigorous but rewarding way of life; and
WHEREAS, today, the owners of small farms help North Carolina maintain a strong economy by
generating millions of dollars from the sale of commodities; and
WHEREAS, more than 90 percent of the 52,040 farms in North Carolina are small farms,
according to the most recent statistics reported by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and
Consumer Services; and
WHEREAS, despite changes in American agriculture, small farmers continue their role as leaders
of North Carolina’s agricultural tradition; and
WHEREAS, since 1972, the Cooperative Extension Program at North Carolina Agricultural and
Technical State University, in cooperation with North Carolina State University, the United States
Department of Agriculture, the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, and
select county agencies, has helped lead the effort to provide assistance to the small farmers of North
Carolina; and
WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina recognizes the contributions of small farms to our
economy, agriculture and way of life;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, BEVERLY EAVES PERDUE, Governor of the State of North Carolina,
do hereby proclaim March 25-31, 2012, as “SMALL FARMS WEEK” and March 28, 2012, as
“SMALL FARMERS’ APPRECIATION DAY” in North Carolina and urge all citizens to support
efforts to help small farms grow and prosper.
