A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts was established by the North Carolina General Assembly
on March 7, 1 887, as a land-grant university to provide a liberal and practical education that focused on military tactics, agriculture and the
mechanical arts; its name was officially changed to North Carolina State University in 1963; and
WHEREAS, classes at the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts began in the fall of 1889, with 72 students and
six faculty, and has since developed into one of the nation’s leading comprehensive public research universities and the largest institution of
higher education in North Carolina, with more than 34,000 students and 8,000 faculty and staff; and
WHEREAS, NC State University continues to fulfill its land-grant mission of providing outstanding teaching, research and extension
services for the benefit of the people of North Carolina; and
WHEREAS, NC State is consistently ranked as one of the nation’s best values in higher education for its combination of academic
quality and affordability; and
WHEREAS, NC State graduates more than 7,500 students each year with the knowledge and skills needed to enter, and make a
positive impact in,0 North Carolina’s workforce; and
WHEREAS, NC State provides a strong return on investment for North Carolina, returning eight dollars to the economy for every
dollar the state spends on research and education at the university; and
WHEREAS, NC State and its alumni provide $7.3 billion in economic impact in North Carolina annually; and
WHEREAS, NC State research and discovery leads to new technologies that drive innovation and job creation, having yielded 157
new consumer products, 752 patents, 82 start-up companies and thousands of new jobs; and
WHEREAS, the annual economic impact in North Carolina of federal and private research attracted by NC State is $320 million; and
WHEREAS, NC State’s Cooperative Extension serves all 100 North Carolina counties annually, conducting 1.9 million face-to-face
contacts and 4.7 million non face-to-face contacts; and
WHEREAS, over the past five years, NC State’s Industrial Extension Service has returned more than half a billion dollars in direct
annual gain to the state, by helping businesses apply the latest technologies and best practices to increase efficiency, productivity and quality;
and
WHEREAS, NC State’s Centennial Campus is a national model of a public-private partnership research campus with more than 130
industry and government partners working alongside university researchers in state-of-the art facilities; and
WHEREAS, NC State’s humanities, arts and design programs have greatly enriched the state’s cultural life; and
WHEREAS, NC State is built on a tradition of transformation, continually demonstrating throughout its 125-year history an
unwavering commitment to education, research and outreach that makes a difference, preparing today's brightest minds to provide practical
solutions for tomorrow’s greatest challenges and to make North Carolina and the world a better place;
NOW. THEREFORE, I. BEVERLY EAVES PERDUE, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim March 7, 2012,
as “NORTH CAROLYN > ^jT.^TE UNIVERSITY DAY" in North Carolina, and urge our citizens to wear red and white to commend this
observance.
