BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA
A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, Booker T. Washington, founder of Tuskegee University, encouraged Julius
Rosenwald to fund the construction of six rural schools in Macon County Alabama in 1913 that led to the
establishment of the Rosenwald Fund; and
WHEREAS, the Rosenwald Schools were established to help address the lack of educational
resources in the rural south for African Americans; and
WHEREAS, between 1917-1932 the Rosenwald Fund invested in the construction of 813 schools,
teachers’ homes, and industrial shops in North Carolina, more than any other southern state; and
WHEREAS, Rosenwald Schools in North Carolina and throughout the southeast, including the
Walnut Cove Colored School, are preserved as a part of our rich heritage for future generations; and
WHEREAS, the Walnut Cove Colored School is now a North Carolina certified senior citizen’s
center, serving the Stokes County community by providing hot meals, exercise and educational programs
for senior residents, and also used for community meetings, receptions, special events and town planning
meetings; and
WHEREAS, the Slate of North Carolina joins alumni, supporters, local governments, elected
officials and citizens in recognizing the impact and contributions of the Rosenwald Schools of North
Carolina;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, BEVERLY EAVES PERDUE, Governor of the State of North Carolina,
do hereby proclaim February 18, 2012, as “ROSENWALD SCHOOLS DAY” in North Carolina and
commend its observance to all citizens.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the Great Seal of the State of
North Carolina at the Capitol in Raleigh this seventh day of February in the year of our Lord two
thousand and twelve, and of the independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-
sixth.
