LAW DAY

BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA
A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, throughout the 221-year history of the State of North Carolina, lawyers have
provided service to this state, including William Hooper and John Penn, signers of the Declaration of
Independence, William Blount, signer of the U.S. Constitution, James Iredell, the sixth associate justice of
the U.S. Supreme Court and James Caswell the first Governor; and
WHEREAS, 24,000 active attorneys and 430 state and federal judges are currently licensed to
practice law in North Carolina; and
WHEREAS, approximately 3,800 students are studying law in the state’s seven existing law
schools located at Campbell University, Charlotte School of Law, Duke University, Elon University,
North Carolina Central University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Wake Forest
University; and
WHEREAS, the national observance of Law Day was first proclaimed by President Dwight D.
Eisenhower on February 3. 1958; and
WHEREAS, the North Carolina Bar Association, with more than 13,500 members including
nearly 6,700 members of its Young Lawyer’s Division, encourages North Carolina students in grades four
through twelve to participate in law-related competitions held in conjunction with its annual Law Day
Celebration; and
WHEREAS, this State and Nation are better places to live because or our strong tradition of
liberty and justice, and because of the contributions of dedicated members of the legal profession, this
year proudly marks the 53rd observance of Law Day;
NOW, THEREFORE, 1, BEVERLY EAVES PERDUE, Governor of the State of North Carolina,
do hereby proclaim May 7, 2010, as “LAW DAY” in North Carolina and urge our citizens to recognize
the significance and heritage of our legal system.

Carolina at the Capitol in Raleigh this sixteenth day of May in the year of our Lord two thousand and ten, and of
the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-fourth.
