BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA
A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, motorsports is a thriving engine in the State of North Carolina with an economic impact of
S5.1 billion annually and brings both national and worldwide attention to our State; and
WHEREAS, North Carolina is the home of two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series events, the NASCAR Sprint
All-star Challenge, two NASCAR Nationwide Series events, and a Camping World Truck Series event, all held at
Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord; and
WHEREAS, Rockingham Dragway in Richmond County is the host of the IHRA Spring Nationals and the
IHRA World Finals each year; and
WHEREAS, in 2008, the first NHRA Series event was held in North Carolina at the ZMAX Dragway in
Concord and the ZMAX will host a NHRA Series event in 2009; and
WHEREAS, North Carolina is home to more NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams, Nationwide Series teams
and Camping World Truck Series teams than any other state; and
WHEREAS, each year more than one million fans attend racing events in North Carolina; and
WHEREAS, North Carolina supports NASCAR Day, May 15, 2009, and encourages racing fans to make a
$5 donation to the NASCAR Foundation Family of Charities which supports a variety of charities, including
children’s health, animal welfare and wildlife conservation and wear their NASCAR Day lapel pin to show their
support; and
WHEREAS, North Carolina is proud to be the home of the coveted NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte;
and
WHEREAS, on May 20, 2009, in Mooresville, the “Walk of Fame” will be unveiled memorializing the
contribution of legendary NASCAR drivers, solidifying our rich history and heritage in the sport of stock car
racing; and
WHEREAS, North Carolina is the “State of Racing” and it is fitting that the Month of May is designated to
celebrate the many contributions of racing to our State and our appreciation of the industry and sport that is a
driving factor in our economy;
NOW, THEREFORE, 1, BEVERLY EAVES PERDUE, Governor of the State of North Carolina do hereby
proclaim May 2009, “IMOJORSPORTS MONTH” in North Carolina and I commend all citizens to recognize and
support this
