Perdue Appoints Stewart to District Court Bench in Harnett, Johnston, and Lee Counties RALEIGH - Gov. Bev Perdue today appointed Caron Hall Stewart to the District Court bench for the 1 1th Judicial District which covers Harnett, Johnston, and Lee counties. She will fill the vacancy created by the elevation of Judge C. Winston Gilchrist to the Superior Court bench. “Caron will be a great asset to the citizens of the 1 1 District on the District Court bench,” said Gov. Perdue. “Her broad legal experience and demonstrated commitment to making her community a better place will serve her well as a district court judge.” Stewart has spent thirteen years as an assistant district attorney in the 1 1th Prosecutorial District. During that time, she prosecuted a broad range of criminal cases with a focus on crimes involving domestic violence, rape, child abuse, and murder. In addition, she spent twelve years in private practice in Harnett County, handling a mixture of civil, criminal, and domestic cases. She received the overwhelming majority of votes in the local bar election for nominees for this judgeship. Under state law governing district court vacancies, local district bars hold an election, choosing among lawyers who have asked to be considered for the position. The names of the three candidates who receive the most votes are sent to the Governor, who selects one of the three. Active in her community, Stewart has served on the board of directors of SAFE of Harnett County and as a member of the Harnett County Juvenile Crime Prevention Council and Monitoring Committee, the Harnett County Child Fatality Task Force, and the Lee County Juvenile Crime Prevention Council. Stewart received her law degree from Campbell University School of Law and was awarded a bachelor of science degree from East Carolina University. She is married to Vernon Stewart, the
