Bloodroot, lady slipper» wild
columbine, showy orchids,
trout lily, wood anemone,
trillium — the mere names oi
these early spring bloomers
lift the hearts of wild flower
enthusiasts everywhere. Seeking
these delicate native plants is an
annual quest lor many in the
mountains, especially during
April and May. Wildflower fans
might hike for miles in hopes of
a glimpse of this spring bounty.
An easier alternative is to visit
the Daniel Boone Native Gardens
in Boone, one of three public
gardens in the state overseen and
supported by the Garden Club of
North Carolina, Inc.
“This is a thrcc-acrc garden
with an incredible wealth of
native plant material that would
take days to see in the wild,"
says Kit Olson Fisher, a volunteer
and recently retired counselor at
Appalachian State University.
