North Carolina
Notables
The Order of the Long Leaf Pine has been recognizing remarkable
individuals for more than four decades.
What do Dean Smith, the Rev. Billy Graham, and Tammy Wynette have
in common? They’re all members of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine,
and, as such, arc designated "Ambassadors Extraordinary.”
The highest civilian honor awarded by the governor in North
Carolina, the prestigious Order of the Long Leaf Pine is presented for
exceptional service to the state. Bestowed at the discretion of the sitting
governor, the award appears to have been given in its early years as a
gesture of goodwill or friendship to visiting dignitaries as well as North
Carolinians. Consequently, many of the earliest recipients were from out
of state. According to early records, the first Order of the Long Leaf Pine
was given to George Ringgold, editor of Film Careers magazine in
Los Angeles, California, in 1965.
