the University of North Carolina. Today,
that same small town has graduated to

Stables vit atop the hill on Franklin Street.
"As the town's commercial transportation
center, the stable* rented hotses foe hire for
visitors and townspeople." Gurlia says. “At
that time, people weren't able to keep horses
within cits limns overnight. The horses were
vsalkcd down the hill every evening and taken
home to Sparrow Farm, where they were fed
and scrubbed. In the morning, the horses
were walked from the farm back up the hill
to the stables."
During the excavation of The Franklin
Hotel, a horseshoe from the stables was
recovered and is now in the possession of
the hotel. Plans arc underway to have the
historical memorabilia displayed for all
to enjoy.

beginning in the 1950*. Today, live Franklin
Hotel occupies this spot and features 6? guest
