■And Mime people discover friends

The bakery is one of Brevard's
natural gathering places, and it
typifies much of the towns charm:
sophisticated fare, down-home ease,
and a friendly welcome.

Ever»' morning. Bracken
Mountain Bakery, located near
the heart of downtown Brevard,
open» to retiree» and local» lined up
outside to be first in the door for their
daily fate of pastries, coffee, and
camaraderie. Maple- walnut sticky
buns, apricot brioche, and croissants,
all made fresh each morning at this
European-style brcad-and-paitry
bakery, disappear fast. But the appetite
for connection and conversation rivals

natural beauty. Brevard is fast becoming
a magnet for young professionals w ith
families, as well as a draw for retirees
and seasonal visitors.

it’s fairly crackling with signs of
growth, both new construction
(downtown condominiums and a
$7.5 million library) and restoration
of older buildings.

• “I spent the first two years
lust emptying trash —
old newspapers and boxrs —
from the upper floors. And
every time rain was forecast
(and it rams a lot in
Transylvania County) I'd set my
alarm and head over to the hotel
with buckets to catch all the leaks.”
