Sail up the Pamlico River any
Friday afternoon, just as mariners
have done since the 1600s. A small
city appears off the starboard bow.
Gulls circle above. As your bait slides
pi st the opened train trestle, two young
bo>% fishing from the tracks yell down
and wave a welcome. Dozens of boats
arc anchored out across from the
riverfront docks — sailboats, fishing
boats, and family cruisers. Flags fly
from their sterns.
Approiching the docks, the riverfront
is awash with people, music, laughter,
and the aroma of Down Fast baihecue.
The smiling clock attendant directs you
into your reserved slip and grabs your
dock lines.
