Sculptors from across the United
States gather in Caldwell County
every September for the county's
annual sculpture competition. The contest,
which awards cash prizes, is usually held
the Saturday after Labor Day with the
works of art on display for the public to
enjoy at no cost. The Caldwell Arts
Council sponsors the festive fair-like event
with food vendors, live music, and hands-
on art activities for children and adults.
This year’s 17th annual celebration will
take place in Lenoir on September 7.
Sculpture, great furniture shopping, and
natural beauty all draw visitors to
Caldwell County. Situated in the foothills
of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the county
was created in 1841 and bears the name
of the first president of the University of
North Carolina. James Caldwell, a noted
advocate of public education, helped
secure the county's future by pushing for a
railroad to be built from Raleigh to
Tennessee. When the railroad finally came
to Caldwell in 1884, it opened up the
county to new and exciting opportunities.
