“Rosebud”
Waxhaw resident Haskell Eargle brings his award-winning flourish to flowers,
designing beautiful bouquets for the Academy Awards.
Internationally acclaimed floral
designer Haskell Eargle likes to
tell people he got his start as a
young boy, serving as the official
florist when family pets died.
“You give me a dead cat in a shoe
box, and I’ll show you a good
funeral,” the 73-year-old Waxhaw
man says. He laughs as he says this,
of course, but given Eargle's eye¬
popping resume, he probably could
arrange a feline funeral so beautiful
that even the angels would catch
their breath.
Eargle's 50-plus years in the floral
industry have taken him around the
world, both as a floral designer and
as a program presenter about floral
design. Most notable among his
many iourneys are his 2 1 -year
association with the prestigious
Tournament of Roses Parade in
Pasadena, California, and his trip last
March to Los Angeles for the 2000
Academy Awards, where he arranged
flowers for some of the stars' dressing
rooms. He has a second date with
Oscar this month, spending a week in
Los Angeles to help with floral
designs for the big night.
"It was absolutely wonderful,”
Eargle says of last year's close
encounter with the rich and famous,
although he acknowledges that he
rarely goes to movies anymore and
therefore wasn’t exactly ooh-ing and
