of the Department of Archives and History. A detailed autobiographical
account dated March, 1972, is included in the collection.
Almost all the seventy-seven autograph letters in the collection were
written by Pvt. Frank Cox Lewis (1878-1918) of Kinston to his parents,
brothers, and sister during the Spanish-American War. Lewis, the son of
Dr. Richard H. Lewis, had attended the University of North Carolina in

for three years, with service in the Philippines.
The first letter, December, 1898, is from Fort Leavenworth, Kansas,

from the army in September, 1901, but remained in Manila as a government
clerk in the office of the depot quartermaster. Although his brother
Dr. William F. Lewis was stationed in Manila for two years during this
time and is mentioned frequently in the letters, there are no letters
written by him in the collection.
Frank Lewis's letters describe both what^he sees and hie reactions
to it: Fort Leavenworth, the troop train, San Francisco and Chinatown,
the troop ship, Honolulu, and Manila Bay where his ship anchors near
